    Session 1: Integrating Practitioner Reflection


    Reflective practice is increasingly recognized as a key element in career development. Professionals are encouraged to reflect on themselves, their clients, their work, and how career concepts evolve in today’s world. This session will provide tools and models to support that reflection.

    Session 2: Career Development Practice Is Built on Relationships 

    Client-centred practice has long emphasized the importance of high quality, authentic, and safe helping relationships. Such relationship building is essential to support effective career assessment, goal setting, and decision making. Participants will learn strategies to build meaningful, impactful relationships with clients within the limited time they have.

    The working alliance amongst career professionals and clients can be impacted by a variety of factors including personal characteristics, motivation, and readiness for change. Participants will consider how to build competencies and transferrable skills in collaboration with clients, ensuring self-efficacy and autonomy are respected.

    Session 4: Career Development Practice Requires Customization 

    The need for customized practices in service delivery is growing as career development professionals are working with increasingly complex, multi-barriered, and diverse clients. Participants will discuss how simple, small-scale accommodations and adjustments can have large impacts when appropriately tied to client needs, preferences, and expectations.

    Session 5: Career Development Practice Is Based on Theory 

    Career theory provides an evidence base for our practice – it guides our approach, informs our choice of interventions, and provides evidence of impact. If, however, we limit ourselves to working with one theory, we may miss the full spectrum of evidence-based practices available to us. Participants will discuss how systemic perspectives can support holistic, integrated practices that are grounded in theory.

    Session 6: Career Development Practice Occurs in Cultural Context

    Cultural diversity extends beyond race, gender, and age to include a wide variety of contexts and worldviews. Culturally responsive practice requires attending to such cultural contexts through multiple pathways, methods, and approaches. Participants will explore the cultural suitability of their practice and consider how to cultivate inclusive practices.

    Career practice has a long history of social justice advocacy helping disenfranchised and un- or under-represented groups to find meaningful work or creating opportunities for engagement. Participants will leave inspired to use their professional voice to combat unjust, discriminatory practice and to address sociopolitical challenges.

    Session 8: Career Development Practice Involves Collaboration With Other Professionals

    Successful career development involves a lifelong commitment across a village of supporters (e.g., mentors, family, friends) and professionals (e.g., counsellors, educators). CDPs are often at the centre of multidisciplinary teams of dedicated professionals working together to support a client’s career goals. Participants will consider how to expand and engage with professional networks within the career sector and other communities.
