The Labour Market Information Council’s latest snapshot report, What job postings can tell us about skills in Canada, analyzed over 3 million job postings in Canada, and what stood out? Skills.
Not credentials. Not job titles. Skills.
Nine of the top ten in-demand skills were soft skills, including teamwork, communication, and customer service. Only one technical skill made the list. These results echo what we’ve been hearing from you: what’s really driving hiring decisions in your communities.
The report also introduces a new and innovative way of examining how skills cluster together. For example, if a job ad asks for “communication,” chances are it also wants “writing.” These relationships can help employment service providers better prepare job seekers and fine-tune their training.
So, what do we do with this information?
As employment service providers, you already understand the importance of soft skills and have been integrating them into your work for some time. What this report offers is validation and an opportunity to strengthen the case for the approaches you’re already taking. ASPECT will continue to support your efforts by sharing research, amplifying your voice, and advocating for systems that reflect the realities you see every day.
