Here's to a resilient year ahead!

January 23, 2025 6:47 PM | Anonymous member (Administrator)

With the Lunar New Year starting next week, 2025 has already proven challenging, and the immediate future appears even more uncertain. While a new year typically brings hope and excitement, this one comes with unique hurdles and complexities.

From the U.S. president's bizarre and swift executive orders to Canada's federal political uncertainty with the Liberal leadership race, parliamentary proroguing, and weekly premier meetings addressing potential economic fallout from U.S. tariffs, we are clearly in flux. The urgency is reflected in the firm and direct language of last week's provincial ministerial mandate letters (see the bottom of page 4 and top of page 5 of Minister Malcolson's letter) and economic assessment should the tariff threats go through

On a positive note, thanks to AMSSA for publishing an excellent policy briefing that describes our current situation well in simple language; I encourage you to take a look.

This week brought further challenges from last spring's $625 million federal cuts to employment programs, resulting in a $74 million shortfall in BC's provincial programs. Unfortunately, hopes for last-minute funding relief did not materialize. Those with contracts through the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills may have already received updates, with more adjustments expected across contracts.

While these challenges are significant, they also present an opportunity for resilience, innovation, and collaboration. Our sector has weathered uncertainties before, and this moment is no different. By coming together, sharing ideas, and leveraging our collective strengths, we can navigate these changes and continue to support those who rely on our services.

The theme of our upcoming ASPECT Conference, Reinventing Work: Resilience, Opportunity, and Community, reminds us of the power of adaptability and partnership. That's our strength. Together, we will find creative solutions to today's challenges, build stronger connections, and create a future that reflects the values and strengths of our community.

ASPECT will continue working for you regardless of how the pendulum swings. If your organization is not a member of ASPECT, I encourage you to join us to support our work.
